Rice Intro

Paddy is the most important and extensively grown food crop in the world. It is the staple food of more than 60 percent of the world population.

Rice is mainly produced and consumed in the Asian region. India is one of the major producer and exporter of rice in world market. Indian rice is highly appreciated in world market for its taste and suitability. There are many varieties of rice grown and processed in India. The major rice exports from India is of parboiled rice & white rice.

Most of the rice that is produced in the world is used for direct human consumption. Rice can also be found in cereals, snack foods, brewed beverages, flour, oil, syrup and religious ceremonies to name a few other uses.

Rice is primarily a high-energy calorie food. The major part of rice consists of carbohydrate in the form of starch. It also contains protein and the nutritive value of rice protein is considered much higher than that of wheat and maize or other cereals. It has all eight of the essential amino acids, necessary building blocks for strong muscles. Rice is also a good source of other essential nutrients -- thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, phosphorus, iron and potassium.
